A book of inspirational tales from the lives of Swansea women has been compiled by a double alumnus in aid of a cancer charity.

'Courage: Women of Swansea' was edited by Dr Ruth Jenkins (pictured), who spent six months researching the book and compiling over 40 stories.

Each story gives an insight into the changing roles and circumstances of women over the past century. The anthology's youngest contributor is just 18 years old; the oldest contribution was related by a woman who was born in 1886.

And all proceeds from the sale of the book will go directly to the Macmillan Cancer Relief South and West Wales Appeal. The appeal aims to raise money to pay for six new Macmillan posts and one has already begun work at Singleton Hospital.

Dr Jenkins, who studied English and German at degree level before taking her PhD in German Literature, organised a lunch for the book at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery on Friday, October 1st.

'Reaching out'

The book sold out on the night and is now being reprinted. The event raised £1,800 in total.

But what inspired Dr Jenkins to put together the remarkable collection of stories?

'I just felt that lots of money is put into research but when someone is diagnosed with cancer it is the patient and the family who need help,' she said.

'Macmillan embodies the old Christian principle of 'reaching out'.'
